Description
Brain dynamics is described at the level of single neurons, microcircuits, and global cortical dynamics. Beginning from the discussion of harmonic oscillators, we introduce the basic knowledge needed to describe spiking dynamics of neurons. This is then used to classify neurons according to different spiking behaviors. We then describe universal architectural aspects of microcircuits that connect the single neurons into functional substructures. Finally, we describe generation, stability, and possible functionality of cortical oscillations in the so-called gamma range. The latter are observed in the context of cognitive processing.
